Ramadan Spirit from Abdullah Quilliam, Baron Headley and Marmaduke Pickthall, the Great British Islam



Ramadan, a priceless month, gives many spirits for all of Moslem in this world. There are many activities which make Ramadan to be a unique month. The first is Sahoor when people wake up in early morning for first eating. They eat together with Thank God until sunrise. The next, reading Al-Qur'an makes their days valuable. Factually, reading Al-Qur'an can do every day but it will be different when it is did in Ramadan when Moslem rise their intensity to do it. In common day or common month, Moslem only read Al-Qur'an at least when they have time, however in Ramadan they can do it at least one day one juz. It is caused by their spirit to read Al-Qur'an go up in Ramadan. In addition, the good activity of Ramadan also includes helping the others, especially for poor people. It is usually called as Zakat that is given not only for poor people, but also for orphan, ibn as-Sabil, and people who have debt. Zakat would be given in the last month of Ramadan.

Terawih become the next famous activity in Ramadan, because it is the particular prayer, makes Moslem much closer with God that only do in the month. Ramadan also consists of Euphoria in bazaar which sells diverse of food and drink that all people need them for preparing their breakfasting. It creates the rising brotherhood of each other. They, especially for children, get most loved from the others. Thus, the month is called as Lovely month.

In Ramadan session, the writer would like to share about one of history that has relation with widely of Islam in Britain. The history accords to Great British Islam. Great British Islam, a documentary of BBC, tells Islamic clandestine story in Britain. It includes three Victorian gentlemen, Abdullah Quilliam, Lord Headley, and Marmaduke Pickthall, who embraced Islam especially in West Word. Every one of them had special story that makes them become member of Great British Islam. They had the superiority by themselves to be greatest British Islam.

First of all was Abdullah Quilliam, born in Liverpool, had an original name William Henry Quilliam. He became the first Moslem of Victorian and established the growth of Islam in the clan. Besides, he built a mosque and an Institute to evolve Islam in his state. The name of the University is Liverpool Muslim Institute which not only was built for Muslim but also for non-Muslim. The Institute also published a magazine, Crescent, told about the news of Islam in Britain especially and Muslim World properly beside about Science Lecture. The next greatest person was Lord Headley, the 5th Baron of Headley, was born at 1855 and died at 1935. He was the student of Abdullah Qulliam and got invitation from Abdullah to spread Islam. He spreads Islam by moving to other countries such India and did Hajj at 1923. Marmaduke Pickthall, the third Greatest British Islam, added Muhammad on his original name. He was born at 1875. The fame of him was he translated the Holy Al-Qur'an from Arabic to British Language. In addition, the first translation was published at 1930.

In a nutshell, the history gives spirit to Moslem because their fighting to make Islam widely is good story.
